Introducing SkillCorner’s New Pressure Metrics

.

Understanding Pressure

Pressure is a key factor in elite football. It shapes how teams behave collectively on the pitch, while an individual's ability to cope with it is often what separates the elite performers from the rest. While its importance is well-recognized, quantifying pressure accurately has had limited success.

Historically, the pressure data produced by many data providers has been limited to a static, binary condition - either present or absent. This approach relies on space-based proxies that fail to capture how context evolves while a player is in possession. It identifies that pressure exists, but does not reflect the specific variables that shape it or how players actually respond to it.

Pressure 2.0

To address this, SkillCorner have integrated detailed pressure attributes into every individual player possession within Dynamic Events, enriching each action with a high level of contextual detail. This evolution of our Game Intelligence package replaces aggregated metrics with advanced contextual data, delivering more accurate insights at match and competition level.

The result redefines how pressure is quantified, and most importantly, broadens both the depth and range of insights available to practitioners when evaluating the impact of pressure on player performance and tactical fit.

New Pressure Metrics

To bring this new pressure framework to life, we focused on two fundamental questions:

  1. How does being under pressure really influence a football player?

Football is a game of space, time, technique and relationships - all contributing to successful actions and how performance is ultimately judged. To measure this, each individual player possession within our Dynamic Events now comes with a set of new, previously unavailable flags providing a unique layer of contextual information that sets a new data benchmark:

- Time to Impact: measures the distance and approach speed of closing defenders.
- Space Constraint: defines the space available to the receiver based on opposition density, proximity to the touchline, and body positioning.
- Passing Option Ease: evaluates the availability of nearby teammates and the likelihood of completing a pass.
- Reception Difficulty: accounts for the technical load required to control the ball, considering factors such as pass speed, height, etc.

Each of these flags is classified across five levels, ranging from Very Easy to Very Difficult.

  • Overall Pressure Degree: a single, model-based metric that integrates the four flags above with additional contextual variables, including player positioning, expressed on a five-level scale from None to Very High.

  1. How do players respond to pressure?

Understanding context alone is not enough. The real question is how players respond to pressure - whether they invite it or evade it, play safe or deliberately operate in high-pressure situations to create advantage. To capture this, every possession is split into two moments: possession start and possession end. This allows for a more precise analysis of how individual decisions and behaviours influence the game, both individually and collectively.

At the end of each possession, the Overall Pressure Degree is reported, together with updated values for Time to Impact and Passing Option Ease. Space Constraint and Reception Difficulty, which are closely linked to the reception phase, refer exclusively to the start of the possession.

Looking to identify midfielders who draw pressure before releasing the ball, or who act as catalysts to help their team escape it? Or wide attackers who engage defenders on the flank, drawing them into 1v1 situations before producing dangerous actions? These insights - and many more - are now accessible with SkillCorner’s latest Pressure Metrics.
